Compulsory Service
In my opinion I do not feel anyone should not have to commit to any type of compulsory service. It would go against our rights as humans to choose what we wish to do with our lives. If it was mandatory for a person to have to serve two years in the military or the Peace Corps it would violate the fifth amendment which states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” This mandatory service act would come into conflict with a person’s beliefs in their religion. I say this because some religions do not feel the need to be associated with things pertaining to wars and such. They feel they should remain neutral in government issues such as the military or the Peace Corps or any other type of compulsory service. It is not just in religion that this service would come into conflict with because there are many who do not have a religion. Some other things that it conflicts with are a person’s right to their freedom. Some people are just against the government and can be anarchist who just don’t want to have anything to do with the government or and type of service to it. I don’t feel anyone for any reason should be forced to do anything they don’t want to do. Compulsory service for eighteen year olds I feel wouldn’t benefit anyone so it shouldn’t be made mandatory.
