Job Fair

San Diego Zoo:

The first company I am choosing to blog about is the San Diego Zoo. In a potential employee they are looking for someone with flexible hours who can work any day out of the week and even on holidays. They want someone who can work whenever they need that person to. The job they have open right now is a merchandising sales clerk. This person should be able to keep the sales items clean, the merchandises well stocked and must be able to perform related duties as required. The applicant must have excellent customer service, cash handling and communication skills. Lastly the person applying has to be at least sixteen years of age. The only part of this description I do not fit is the flexible work hours. I would not be able to work any day of the week or any hour for that matter. I am a clean person and I have very good people skills I would be able to do any and everything that would be asked of me. These skills are well needed because if a person were to become a merchandise sales clerk they would be dealing with customers all day and if they do not have excellent customer service than there is a good chance that the person would either not be hired or would get fired. Customer service is the biggest thing in sales if you do not satisfy the customer than you have no luck in selling anything. I feel I would be about to satisfy any customer with whatever he or she may need because I am a very kind person and I get along with anyone and everyone. I would want to work here because one I love animals and two I fit the job description perfectly, minus the flexibility.

Knott’s Soak City:

The second job I looked during the job fair that I wanted to blog about was Knott’s soak city. There isn’t much potential the employers are looking for in an employee. They actually have competitive hourly wages and flexible scheduling. The jobs they offer include lifeguards, guest services, food service, merchandise (like the SD Zoo) and park services. There weren’t any skills really mentioned in the job description, just what they had. It seemed to me that they are really just trying to get people to apply to the water park. I think I would actually enjoy working at this place because the work hours are flexible and that is really what I need. I would also enjoy the working environment because I love the water and I would be surrounded by it all day. I would be able to get discounts and free tickets for my family and friends. The whole thing just sounds really fun and exciting. What I also like is that they give the option of having advancement in the company like say I really enjoyed working there but my seasonal job is over what then? Well I would be able to get a higher position there and I would be able to continue to work there. I really liked this job and I’m beginning to really consider working there. At first I felt I would not get anything from this job fair but I am now realizing that there are a lot of jobs out there that may be fun and entertaining and I would be getting paid as well.

Compulsory Service

In my opinion I do not feel anyone should not have to commit to any type of compulsory service. It would go against our rights as humans to choose what we wish to do with our lives. If it was mandatory for a person to have to serve two years in the military or the Peace Corps it would violate the fifth amendment which states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” This mandatory service act would come into conflict with a person’s beliefs in their religion. I say this because some religions do not feel the need to be associated with things pertaining to wars and such. They feel they should remain neutral in government issues such as the military or the Peace Corps or any other type of compulsory service. It is not just in religion that this service would come into conflict with because there are many who do not have a religion. Some other things that it conflicts with are a person’s right to their freedom. Some people are just against the government and can be anarchist who just don’t want to have anything to do with the government or and type of service to it. I don’t feel anyone for any reason should be forced to do anything they don’t want to do. Compulsory service for eighteen year olds I feel wouldn’t benefit anyone so it shouldn’t be made mandatory.

Voting

I don’t believe a person should be forced or convinced to vote if he or she didn’t want to do so. If I had a friend who was able to vote, meaning he or she was 18 and a citizen of the United States I wouldn’t try to convince that friend to vote. I myself am part of those eighteen year olds who doesn’t participate in voting. They may have other reasons than I do but I would respect that. For example, maybe that friend didn’t believe in the government so he or she wouldn’t want to be a part of voting for it. Other reasons may be that he or she does not like the candidates that are up for election. My reason is because I have my own government and I place my allegiance to it and nothing else. That government is a Theocracy which is originated from God and is taught through his word the bible. Now I know there are those who share this same belief with me but it is highly unlikely that the people who are at my school that I associate with would have this same reason for not voting. This is why I mentioned before that they may have their own reasons. The way I see it is that if I want a person to respect my opinion, beliefs and values than I have to give them that same respect as well. I cannot try to convince someone to vote when it is against their will to begin with as it is against mine. I would be considered a hypocrite. This is why if I had a friend who was 18 years old and didn’t want to vote I wouldn’t convince them to.

Health Care

Health care is a right that should never be denied to any human being. I feel it is the United States government’s duty to make sure that each and every person should be able to receive health care without having to pay for it. There are many people in this nation who are suffering because they cannot afford the outrageously expensive health care this system has to offer or better yet, they do not qualify to get the service. Health care is not a privilege but the United States like to treat it as one. To me the U.S. seems to think that health care isn’t something everyone should have. If you have enough money then you can afford the price of health care but those without the money have to suffer whatever disease they may have of illness. I watched a video one time about a guy who was going all over the world where health care service was free but they had to pay higher taxes. The people seemed happy and didn’t mind paying the higher taxes. In my opinion I think the United States should run their health care system this way. If what has to happen for everyone to get free health care is paying higher taxes then so be it. Health care should not be a privilege to anyone. Everyone should be able to get it for free or have to pay a little amount for it. I believe all of the United States would be a lot better off if everyone were able to get health care.

Problem Solver

I have always been a problem solver throughout my whole life but I have never perfected this skill until I got to high school. I think problem solving has been a natural thing for me because I’m a very logical person. In my freshmen math class I was one of the top students because solving math problems was just an easy thing for me to do. I was going to be put in a math class that would help me out because the year before I had poor math test scores but I was able to test out of it and I learned geometry. Math isn’t the only example of me being a problem solver. There are other times when I was able to work at solving a problem that was more group related than math. For example in my peer education class we had to decide what lessons we wanted to teach our students and how to go about them. Sometimes we had conflicts as to what we wanted to teach our students and we had to solve those problems. We did so by communicating with each other and exploring all of our options. We discussed what the outcomes of each decision would be and how it would affect the students we taught and how they learned from the activities we decided to carry out with them. The outcome was very good. Because we were able to work at and solve our problems the students we taught benefitted greatly. Becoming a problem solver is a very important quality to have in high school because many problems do arise and it’s important to be able to solve them.
